Preventative Dentistry
Our highly trained hygienists perform a prophylaxis/regular cleaning on patients with no periodontal disease. Some patients suffer from gingivitis, which is a reversible condition that can be cured by proper home and professional care. Our hygienists use a Cavitron which is a device that vibrates and squirts water, following by hand scaling. These professional instruments remove hard build up on teeth that a toothbrush can’t. We follow this by polishing and flossing the teeth. In some cases, we recommend a fluoride treatment twice a year. Our hygienists provide home care instructions tailored to each patient’s individual situation to help them maintain a healthy smile for life.

Teeth Whitening
A common complaint we hear is “my teeth are yellow!” At Riverview Family Dentistry, we offer teeth whitening services. The brand we use is KOR WHITENING. We make custom fitted whitening trays that we recommend you wear prior to a chairside visit. We will show you how to load the trays with the KOR WHITENING gel and give specific home-care instructions. After the professional whitening chairside visit, you get to keep your trays and whiten your teeth periodically as you see fit. Our teeth are exposed to a lot. Different foods, beverages, and smoking cause tooth discoloration over time. That is why having whitening trays comes in handy to give you the freedom of whitening your teeth right at home at your convenience. To maintain white teeth, brush and floss daily, come in for regular cleanings and rinse your mouth with water after consuming dark colored foods and beverages.

Extractions
An extraction is performed to remove a tooth due to infection, cavities, crowding, fracture or other. Saving the tooth is always our priority, but sometimes that is impossible. When extractions are required, the area around the tooth will be numbed and your dentist will remove the tooth. We will go over post op care and educate you on tooth replacement. Please note our dentist does not remove wisdom teeth, but will refer you to an oral surgeon.

Oral Cancer Screenings
Nobody wants to hear that they may have oral cancer. Although it can be fatal, it is easier to treat the earlier it is caught. For this reason, we are proud to assist our patients with an oral cancer screening at every recall visit at no cost.

Periodontal Cleaning
Some patients suffer from periodontal disease which is bone loss around the teeth. Periodontal disease must be treated with scaling and root planing, or also known as deep cleaning. The bone loss causes pockets to form between the teeth and edge of the bone surrounding the tooth. Tartar and plaque accumulate in those pockets, and if they stay there for an extended period of time, will cause even more bone loss. Periodontal disease may lead to tooth abscess and tooth loss. Scaling and root planing allows the hygienist to get under the gums and pockets to remove the buildup to prevent future bone loss. After a deep cleaning is performed, regular periodontal maintenance visits (3-4 times a year) are crucial for long term stability of the bone and gums.
